National NAIDOC Week
The National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee, or NAIDOC, is responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC week, which celebrates the survival of Indigenous culture and its contribution to modern Australia. NAIDOC celebrations are held around Australia in the first full week of July. This is a time for all Australians to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The week is not only celebrated in the Indigenous community, but also in government agencies, schools, local councils and workplaces.
Wherever you live, taking part in NAIDOC Week is a great way to celebrate Indigenous culture and build bridges between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
The Illawarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre is proudly dedicated to promoting and participating in NAIDOC week. NAIDOC Week celebrations this year are the 2nd to the 9th of July.
In addition to the many local activities, NAIDOC celebrations have a ‘national focus.’ This usually includes:
Celebrations based on a committee appointed national theme. Past themes include Our future begins with solidarity (2005), Self-determination: Our Community, Our Future, Our Responsibility (2004), Our Children Our Future (2003) and Recognition, Rights and Reform (2002).
A national focus city or town is appointed by the committee
A national NAIDOC poster competition is launched based on the theme. The winning poster is chosen and distributed before and throughout NAIDOC week.
Celebrations culminate in an awards ceremony and ball held in the focus city.
National awards are given to Indigenous achievers in a number of categories at the ball.
NAIDOC week celebrations in 2006 are from the 2nd to the 9th of July. The focus city is Cairns, QLD and the national theme is: Respect the Past - Believe in the Future
